Rwandan President says Arsenal fans ‘must not accept mediocrity’ after defeat | World | News

Mr Kagame is an Arsenal fan and whose government sponsors the club has said the fans must not accept “mediocrity”. On Friday, Brentford beat Arsenal 2-0 in a shocking victory after the former celebrated its return to the top tier after 74 years.

Expressing his disappointment the Rwandan leader tweeted: “We just must NOT excuse or accept mediocrity.

“A team has to be built with purpose to win win win.

“So that when we lose….it was not to be expected!

“I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests.

The Rwandan government began sponsoring the club in 2018 in a controversial deal worth more than £30 million.

Included in the sponsorship is the “Visit Rwanda” logo stitched on the teams shirts.

The country’s government has excused subsidising the football club by explaining it is worth the profits the country gains from tourism.

However, Mr Kagame’s administration has faced criticisms over the decision.

He has been in control of the nation since the aftermath of the genocide in 1994.
