Reading and Leeds Festivals 2021 confirmed to go ahead after lockdown roadmap news | Music | Entertainment

Earlier this week Boris Johnson announced the coronavirus pandemic’s roadmap for the UK going forward. The Prime Minister announced the government planned to remove all legal limits on social contact on June 21, 2021. The official Reading and Leeds Festival Twitter account followed up on this news today with the event’s return news, announcing it will be going ahead on the August bank holiday weekend.

The tweet read: “Reading and Leeds 2021 Following the government’s recent announcement, we can’t wait to get back to the fields this summer LET’S GO #RandL21.”

The announcement was accompanied by a video of festival goers from 2019 – WATCH BELOW.

The line-up for the festival’s next event was announced last year after Reading and Leeds 2020 was cancelled.

Stormzy is headlining the event on the main stage on Friday. This is the first time the London rapper has ever headlined the festival. He takes the stage after his monumental performance at Glastonbury 2019.

Last year Reading and Leeds Festival boss Melvin Benn spoke to NME about how the 2021 festival might look.

He revealed the company would be looking at having testing as part of the entry.

Benn said: “It will be all-encompassing. It will probably be the government’s version of the Full Capacity Plan, which is even bigger than what mine was. There will be some sort of test.

“By the time August 2021 comes around, it will take ten minutes. You can see the kids outside doing it – who can neck a pint quickest, who can do a test quickest? It will all be automated on phones.”

“We’re in a stage where technology can really help, and the Reading & Leeds audience really understand technology.

“I have no pessimism about it. Of course we’ll overcome it. This year everyone was too scared – but we understand it now.”

Tickets for the Reading and Leeds Festivals are available now.
