Paul Newman ‘was so insecure’ and ‘always anxious’ – Star was ‘heartbroken’ by his career | Films | Entertainment

Paul Newman was a titan of Hollywood cinema in the Sixties and Seventies and long before he died in 2008 at 83, he recorded hours of incredibly honest musings about his life that were left long-forgotten in a basement laundry room for years. The star may have given up on turning the mountains of content into a memoir when he became overwhelmed with how much material there was, but now it’s been edited into one that’s released next week. The result is an incredibly revealing deep dive into the highs, lows, and insecurities of a man seeking to dispel the myths around his life.

The youngest of Paul’s five daughters is Clea Newman Soderlund, whose mother is Joanne Woodward.

Upon reading the manuscripts of her father’s tell-all confessions about his true feelings, she admitted to finding it all “very raw” as revelations about him that she never knew came to light.

Speaking with the BBC, the 57-year-old shared: “He was so insecure… I struggled to understand how I didn’t know how he could see himself so differently from the way his children and family felt about him, because he seemed to be so confident about everything. I knew that he never felt probably as good about his work as everybody else did, but I think I was surprised at how harshly he criticised himself.”

In his own words in Paul Newman: The Extraordinary Life Of An Ordinary Man – A Memoir, the late star admitted to being “always anxious” and struggling with feelings of “not being good enough.”

The handsome star was also haunted by how much of his success was more to do with being good-looking than talented as an actor.

He confessed: “It is difficult for a person like me, who has always had a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that his success comes simply from being fortunate enough to be born looking a certain way.” His daughter said he wanted to be treated more than that.

Gethers added: “What he recorded, and in essence what he wrote, was so honest and revealing. It showed this extraordinary arc, a guy who was very, very flawed at the beginning of his life and as a young man, but who, as he got older, turned into the Paul Newman we want him to be.”

His daughter admitted that in his final decades her father “worked hard on himself” and “felt much better about himself as he got older”.

Paul Newman: The Extraordinary Life Of An Ordinary Man – A Memoir is out on October 27, 2022.
