China’s Yang Qian won the women’s 10-metre air rifle final. Russia’s Anastasiia Galashina earned silver while the bronze medal went to Swiss shooter Nina Christen.

Ms Galashina was in the lead for the gold in the final.

However, she ended up signing off with her lowest score of 8.9 for a total of 251.1.

Ms Yang then set a new Olympic record score of 251.8 after firing 9.8.

Switzerland’s shooter obtained bronze with a score of 230.6.

This year’s Olympic Games comes just over a year after the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Covid delay.

The decision to postpone the 2020 event has made the it the most costly games in modern memory.

Eleven gold medals are up for grabs on Day One and a star-studded cast of British hopefuls are taking part in preliminary rounds.
