Marvel disaster: Eternals first rotten MCU movie while producer says sequel no guarantee | Films | Entertainment

Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man in 2008, there have been some five-star hits and only a few weak outings. When fans poll the Marvel Studios MCU movies, often the likes of Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk from the early days come near the bottom. However, even these blockbusters still managed to remain fresh on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator of critics’ reviews.

The lowest to date was 2013’s Thor: The Dark World on 66 per cent, but for the first time in the history of Marvel Studios, the franchise now has a rotten score for one of its movies in Eternals.

Set to release on Friday, the 26th MCU blockbuster currently has a big green splat on 58 per cent after 143 reviews at the time of writing.

The Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie-led blockbuster held onto the fresh score of 60 per cent for a few days but has now succumbed to being Marvel’s first rotten dud.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus reads: “An ambitious superhero epic that soars as often as it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing — and occasionally confounding — new directions.”

Since its premiere and press screening, Eternals reviews have been decidedly mixed.

If anything, this should be rather surprising given not only Marvel’s track record but also the talent on show.

Eternals features an all-star ensemble cast with an epic plot that follows a group of immortals over thousands of years of cosmic history.

Even the director Chloé Zhao won two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards this year with Nomadland.

Perhaps a direct sequel in an Eternals 2 is conditional on how well the first film does at the box office and how fans take to the characters.

Even if there’s no follow-up, no doubt these immortals will turn up in other MCU movies and TV shows.

After all, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is yet to have his own solo outing after Edward Norton left the franchise early on, but his Bruce Banner has been warmly received; most notably in Thor Ragnarok.

Eternals hits cinemas on November 5, 2021.
