Kate Middleton news: Duchess wears Princess Diana’s earrings given to royal before wedding

Members of the Royal Family have many valuable, and often sentimental, jewels in their collection. Kate Middleton has been known to wear many pieces which once belonged to her mother-in-law Princess Diana.

For example, the mother-of-three has regularly sported a pair of pearl drop earrings during special occasions.

The timeless jewels first entered the Royal Family when they were given to Princess Diana as a “sending off” gift before her wedding.

They were gifted to the royal by her family’s jewellery, according to Alexandra Michell, Gemologist at Prestige Pawnbrokers of Channel 4’s Posh Pawn.

She told Express.co.uk: “Another wedding gift to Princess Diana, these pearl earrings were given to her a month before her wedding day by Collingwood Jewellers, the family jewellers of the Spencer Family, and worn as part of her sending-off outfit.”

DON’T MISS

Princess Diana accessorised with the pearl earrings a number of times over the years, both dressing them up and down.

“She wore them over a dozen times either dressed up or down, and they have been worn as many times by Kate to official functions,” Alexandra continued.

“A double diamond drop precedes the open-worked diamond setting from which large pear-shaped pearls are suspended.”

While the timeless jewels have remained in the hands of the royals, the expert suggested they could sell for a huge amount of money.

She stated: “With their Edwardian style, they work perfectly with the Queen Mary’s Lovers Knot Tiara, and have been worn together many times.

“At auction, these beautiful earrings would sell for over £50,000.”

The Duchess of Cambridge is also in possession of another pair of earrings from her mother-in-law.

Kate has often completed her looks with a stylish pair of sapphire and diamond earrings which she appeared to have remodelled.

Alexandra said: “Diana had a lot of sapphire pieces. One of the most important pieces, was a suite given to her by the Saudi Royal Family as a wedding gift in the late 80s. Sapphires were the coloured stone of choice so that Diana could wear these pieces to match her engagement ring.

“Fast forward to Kate’s sapphire earrings, it is believed that of one of these pairs of earrings which Diana had, a part of them was remodelled into a pair of single diamond topped sapphire and diamond cluster earrings.

“Hanging from shepherd’s hooks, the round cut single diamonds look to be about 0.30cts each, with nine slightly larger 0.40cts diamonds on each earring surrounding approximately 5ct each oval cut sapphires, most likely of Kashmir origin.”

The earrings match Kate’s engagement ring and could also be worth a huge sum of money.

“These make a regular appearance in Kate’s rotating jewellery collection, most certainly as they go perfectly, and as intended, with her engagement ring. I estimate these to fetch at auction in excess of £200,000,” Alexandra added.
