Kate Middleton more ‘low-key’ during lockdown stepping away from wearing ‘fine jewellery’

Kate Middleton, 39, has appeared virtually several times throughout the pandemic, opting for both casual and smart looks. The Duchess often adds jewellery to her looks whether that be a pair of earrings, a necklace, a bracelet or rings.

In many of her appearances recently, Kate has opted for more affordable pieces of jewellery rather than her more expensive pieces.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Charlotte Charlotte Leigh from Lottie Leigh Jewellery, explained that Kate has turned towards wearing more affordable and high-street brands.

The expert said: “The Duchess of Cambridge’s choice to step away from wearing her fine jewellery and opting for demi fine jewellery, from brands such as Missoma and Monica Vinader, is for a few reasons in my opinion.

“Firstly, demi-fine jewellery, which is jewellery made from sterling silver and either gold vermeil or gold plate, is much more economical for fashion jewellery.

“This means she can wear on trend pieces, that may or may not remain in fashion.

“Fine jewellery should ideally be saved for more classic pieces (rather than overtly ‘fashionable’ items).

“This confirms what we already know about the Duchess, that although she is in a privileged position, she still does not wish to be overly extravagant and is conscious not to waste money which many people in her position would have no qualms about.”

While Missoma and Monica Vinader still stock some expensive pieces of jewellery, they are a lot more affordable than other brands the Duchess wears like Annoushka.

She explained: “She is also opting for a more ‘low-key’ look, during lockdown and the pandemic.

“Whilst so many are struggling both mentally and financially, it strikes me as a sensitive choice.

“You need only look at the backlash that some high-profile personalities have received, who have been less coy about their extravagant choices.

“Lastly and most importantly I believe her choices to be a show of support.

“It is no coincidence that both businesses are British, and female owned, and I suspect this choice to be her way of championing both the British high street and businesses owned by women.

“The Duchess is renowned for her good taste and looks fabulous whether she is wearing £50,000 of jewels or £150 of demi-fine jewellery.”

Kate has also opted for more casual outfits during the pandemic, wearing a lot more casual tops as well as recycling a lot of her looks.
