Kamala Harris news: Feminist fashion statement Melania Trump and Ivanka first

White, especially in the USA, is associated with the Suffragette movement. The movement secured the right to vote for women at a time when only men were allowed to have their say in the democratic process. It was a landmark moment and the first in many important leap forwards for the battle of equal rights for women, a rights issue that rumbles on to this day.

She wore another white gown for the Liberty Ball ahead of his first day in office.

Ivanka, too, evoked the imagery of the Suffragettes during her father’s campaign and presidency.

She wore white to see her father sworn in to office.

On various other occasions she wore white during her employment as Senior Advisor to the President.

The signal has continued to have huge significance, especially in US politics.

In 1978 the same scene took place during the March for the Equal Rights Amendment in 1978.

To this day the colour is used to make a powerful statement.

For her first day in Congress in 2019, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore white.

Later she wrote on Twitter: “I wore all-white today to honor [sic] the women who paved the path before me, and for all the women yet to come. From suffragettes to Shirley Chisholm, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the mothers of the movement.”
