HMRC update: Britons urged to check their tax code – what the new 1257L code means | Personal Finance | Finance

Why should a tax code be checked?

Each tax year, Britons are encouraged to check their tax code is correct as sometimes mistakes can be made.

This can happen, for instance, if a person leaves their job, or if their income changes.

If a tax code is incorrect, it could mean a person is overpaying, and could be due money back.

If someone believes their tax code to be incorrect, the Government has urged them to use the online Income Tax service or contact HMRC by phone or post.

Usually, if a person pays too much or too little tax across a tax year, then HMRC will inform them of this.
