Freddie Mercury: Dee Snider shares hilarious story of seeing Queen live before their fame | Music | Entertainment

Before they shot to fame, Queen were the opening act for Mott the Hoople. In 1973, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon released their debut self-titled album which caught the attention of fellow future rock star Dee Snider. Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, the Twisted Sister singer said he remembered hearing the track Liar come on the radio and was hooked instantly.

Dee shared: “Liar came on and I was like, ‘Who the f*** is this?’ From that point on I was a Queen fan…from day one.

“I discovered their first album and I remember going to see them open for Mott the Hoople in New York.”

But this was so early in Queen’s career for Freddie Mercury and the band that Dee found himself to be the only one cheering them on.

The 66-year-old remembered: “I was the only person in the entire theatre, not just cheering, I was in the balcony standing in my platform shoes with my big afro, screaming my lungs out.”

Dee said he screamed so much that his friends were embarrassed by all the unwanted attention he was drawing.

The Twisted Sister singer said: “When you’re not appreciated as a band, one fan is worse than none because it’s kind of embarrassing that you only have one fan!

“I remember Brian May looking up at one point to see what the commotion was in the balcony.

“[I was that] one nut [who was] losing his s***! I saw their value, the others did not! And I was right and they were wrong.”

Dee also shared that he could well be back to performing live concerts when touring really kicks off again next year.

He said: “I would love to be a part of the return in 2022, to stand there singing You Can’t Stop Rock and Roll!

“And I don’t think that’s been truer than now…so in time for sure.”

Dee Snider’s Leave a Scar is out now.
