‘Frankly it’s staggering’ Expert lists the 3 major failures from Obama, Trump and Biden | World | News

Taliban fighters have captured most of Afghanistan, and as they circle the capital it seems inevitable that the country will soon be under their control. Many have condemned President Biden’s decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan.

Among the fiercest critics has been Tom Tugendhat MP and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

He said: “There were three events from the United States that have really pulled the rug from under the Afghan government.

Mr Tugendhat told Sky News: “The first was when President Obama – without consulting with the Afghan government – announced the end of US troops in the country.

“The second was when President Trump, behind the back in secret from the Afghan government, negotiated with the Taliban for the release of prisoners.”

Despite calls to reconsider President Biden has continued with his plan to withdraw all US troops by the landmark date of September 11 this year.

September 11 2021 marks 20 years since the tragic 9/11 terror attacks which triggered the Afghanistan war.

Despite alarming Taliban gains the president vows not to pass the war to a fifth president.

He said: “One more year, or five more years, of US military presence would not have made a difference if the Afghan military cannot or will not hold its own country.

“And an endless American presence in the middle of another country’s civil conflict was not acceptable to me.”

After peace talks and the decision was announced to withdraw foreign forces from Afghanistan the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said: “We will work with our US partners to ensure a smooth transition”.

He added: ”we will continue to work with our US/NATO partners in the ongoing peace efforts”.

Despite this hopes that the Afghan government could continue to hold power in without US support are diminishing as the Taliban is rapidly seizing back power.
