China claims victory for Xi Jinping after phone call with ‘anxious’ Joe Biden | World | News

The call was just the second time the pair have spoken to each other on the phone since Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. The Global Times, a state-owned mouthpiece for China’s Communist party, claimed Xi had emerged from the call on the front foot.

The Beijing-based paper claimed: “The phone call, which took place at the US’ request, highlighted Washington’s growing anxiety and need for China’s cooperation on key global issues including climate change, COVID-19 fight, Afghan issues and economic recovery post the pandemic.”

The Global Times also claimed Biden is under fire following a troubling few weeks.

The Chinese media outlet stressed: “The Biden administration is facing huge pressure domestically with crises on multiple fronts.”

Despite stressing they had the upper hand, The Global Times added China wanted to improve Sino-American relations since the presidency of Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump.

They claimed that greater cooperation between Beijing and the White House will “correct the willful policies made by former President Donald Trump.”

Under the administration of the previous President, Beijing introduced tariffs on US goods after the Trump administration introduced levies on Chinese steel.

While the report from Beijing suggested the Biden administration was more receptive, it has been widely claimed the former Senator for Delaware echoes many parts of Mr Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.

The 46th President’s public support has dipped in the polls following the US evacuation of Afghanistan.
